So far, our freshmen students have taken a field trip to UT-Arlington and our sophomores went to SMU. This semester, we are taking a field trip with our Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors to UNT in Denton. College visits are a regular part of the AVID program and provide an opportunity for the students to see some lesser-known college campuses.
Guest speakers are also a regular part of the AVID curriculum. These speakers are college professors and students, local business owners, and politicians who tell their own personal stories to the students. Texas Senator Wendy Davis (a Rebel alum) has spoken to the students in the past and several colleges have sent advisers to speak to the students about opportunities at their perspective schools.
AVID Family Nights are periodical events that allow AVID families to experience what the students do during class. These nights allow for the parents to get information from the AVID Site Team and numerous other sources. The final AVID Family Night will take place April 16th.
Tutorials with real college tutors are an important part of the AVID program. These college students are attending school at local colleges and universities- the University of North Texas, Tarleton State University, and Tarrant County College. Socratic tutorials take place every Tuesday and Thursday where the tutors and students help each other to find the answers to their questions.
